About Us
We are
Southerners that moved to lovely Lincolnshire nearly 10 years
ago. We have three grown up children and respective partners
and 6 gorgeous grandchildren, Grace, Anna, Elsie, Seth,
Brandon and Rio. We moved from a house to a bungalow in 2008,
taking the grandchildren's initials and renaming it
appropriately Bergas.
We have been involved with
the Leonberger for over 23 years, watching the breed, attending
friendly gatherings, picnics, shows and meeting a great bunch
of friends. Kinghern introduced us to the breed and in 1993
Fred very kindly gave us our first one Kinghern Out of my
Dreams, Dreamer on breeding terms. Dreamer joined our busy
house, two GSD’s and a man eating JR. We were smitten and loved
everything about the breed especially their easy going
characters, love of life and their family orientated
temperaments all easily achievable by kind, consistent
training.
Gradually the Leonberger was
to take over from our fist love the German Shepherd.
We
increased our Leo family with Tucker an outstanding male from
Dreamer’s first litter, sadly he wasn’t with us long enough
and died of bone cancer at just 5. Out of Dreamers second
litter we kept Wizzy, a pup which used to just sit and watch
from the whelping box. Never exuberant or forthcoming, well
that soon changed. Wizzy had a character and a half, very
lively, busy bitch that loved to work.
After this litter Dreamer was
retired from breeding, two litters are enough for any bitch.
Dreamer excelled in the show ring, never missing a placing at
any show that she was entered in. Wins at Crufts early on in her life followed by Best
Veteran and Best Bitch at the LCGB show where she gained her
first CC and stud book number, not bad for an old girl of nine
years of age. Dreamer enjoyed life to the full and broke our
hearts when she went to Rainbow Bridge aged 11 years six
months.
Wizzy wasn’t so keen on
showing, to her that was boring and even the placings she
received at shows didn’t impress her. She was much more at
home in her role as a PAT dog or being surrounded by our
family, chasing a ball or playing hide and seek. Wizzy was also
to have two litters, we put Blaze out on breeding terms from
her first litter but unfortunately Blaze had a very high hip
score so she was speyed. We kept a male too called Bear, a
dream of a dog who now spends his days with my brother,
swimming and dining out. Wizzy’s second litter were due to be
born when Jenga was diagnosed with LP/PN shortly followed by
two litter sisters. (see separate section on this). ALL owners were made aware of this and restrictions put
on their registration documents, which would not be lifted.
This was the end of our
breeding line.
Wizzy was with us until she
went to join her mum at the Bridge in June 2009 at the age of
10 years , eight months. Longevity is certainly a bonus of
these lines.
Rika, a
Swedish import, was to continue our breeding plans, after two
lovely litters she was speyed - see
bottom of the Home
page and short article: "So you think breeding is easy”. We have put a bitch on breeding terms in
case we change our thoughts on breeding. Rika is slightly
brain damaged, obvious to us but not to her. She is happy in
her own little shell, enjoying her slow, lazy life and makes
an excellent pillow for our two pug crosses, Bug and Mouse.
Maisie,
our one year old Leo (borrowed from Liz and David Guy Halke)
is a very lively, naughty girl but a joy to have. She
continuously looks for the next thing to destroy, wood,
plaster board, plants, tow bars, even my car has been chewed,
maybe one day she will decide that her toys are better. She
has qualified for Crufts 2010, more by luck than judgement,
but watch this space.
